I saw advertised a botanical illustration, a straight copy from a 19th century publication. It said, ‘This hand colored engraving was made in the 1830s by Sir Joseph Paxton…’ Actually, the illustration was by a little known 19th century artist named Samuel Holden and published by Paxton. Apparently, the seller didn’t notice the text on the illustration. From the late 18th century on, there has been many terrific unsung artists who were incredible botanical illustrators. This mimic is my homage to them, painted at 24 by 16 inches.
I am a former artist-manager living near Vancouver, Canada, now painting full time. You can see a tutorial on some of the techniques I use for my photorealism paintings at https://www.artrage.com/photorealism-tutorial-vic-shelley/
